Forty-eight hospitals in upstate New York reached required performance improvements that were previously set by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. The insurance company announced last week that it would disburse over $22 million as part of an incentive program agreement with the hospitals. Excellus BlueCross BlueShield is a nonprofit subsidiary of BlueCross BlueShield.
Among the greatest achievers of the reward recipients is Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. They proudly raised smoking cessation counseling rates to q remarkable 100 percent.
Pleased with the results, the director of clinical practice analysis James Legault, from the Syracuse hospital, explained that “the ability to combine our goals with Excellus BCBS works well for both organizations.”
A second noteworthy achiever is United Health Services in Binghamton; they worked diligently to improve the ratio of its patients receiving their initial antibiotic within 6 hours of arrival to an impressive 94 percent.
As a result of tying the insurance company’s payments to the participating hospitals, improvements in health outcomes along with patient safety help assure that all involved get “the best quality care and the most value for their healthcare dollars,” noted vice president of quality and health informatics at Excellus, Carrie Frank.
